An OS for 64 MB of RAM
Small on purpose – and tested that way.
AstraOS is a lightweight operating system: the whole system, desktop included, runs in 64 MB of memory. 2 GB are recommended for apps. Tested in a VM.
A rule, not a wish
From the start we set a rule: the operating system itself must run in 64 MB of memory. Recommended are 2 GB, so that apps have room. The rule is tested every time: the system is started in a virtual computer with exactly 64 MB.
How small is it?
- The whole kernel is about 816 KB.
- Desktop, file manager, terminal and web browser run in 64 MB.
- If it runs with 64 MB, it also runs with more.
What this is good for
Old PCs, small devices and virtual computers that start fast. It is not yet tested on real old hardware – only in a virtual computer. We will say so when that changes.

AstraOS is an early pre-alpha. Alpha 0.1 comes on 10 November 2026 at 19:00 and runs in a window with AstraOS Starter for Windows. Everything below is tested in a virtual computer, not yet on real hardware.
