Questions
and answers.
Short, honest answers. If something is a goal and not a feature yet, we say so.
What is AstraOS?
A new operating system – the basic software that runs a computer, like Windows or macOS. We wrote it ourselves, from scratch. It has a desktop, apps, a web browser and a protection system called Astra Shield. Right now it is an early test version (pre-alpha).
Is AstraOS based on Linux or Windows?
No. The core of AstraOS (the kernel) is our own and contains no Linux or Windows code. AstraOS can still start simple Linux and Windows programs. Only a few small parts come from others, for example the start program Limine – we name them on the download page.
Who builds AstraOS?
The code is written by AI assistants. A person who does not program decides what gets built. Every step is tested. Read the story.
When does it come out?
Alpha 0.1 on 10 November 2026 at 19:00, the beta on 1 December 2026. Version 1.0 has no date: it comes when all three goals are met. Dates can move – we will tell you honestly.
Can I install the alpha on my PC?
No. Alpha 0.1 only runs in a window with AstraOS Starter (Windows, Linux, macOS). From the beta you can install it – on your PC or on a USB stick.
Can I install AstraOS on a Mac?
No. On a Mac you can try AstraOS in a window and – from the beta – make a USB stick for another PC. Installing it on the Mac itself is not possible.
Is it safe to try?
Yes. In the Starter, AstraOS runs in a window, separate from your files. It is still a test version – do not use it for anything important.
Why do I have to agree to counting?
So that we can show real numbers of users. We only count anonymously that AstraOS is used – not who you are. Without your yes, the Starter does not start the alpha. Before the release we will publish exactly what is sent.
Which computers does it run on?
AstraOS Starter will run on Windows, Linux and macOS – on normal PCs (x86/x64) and on ARM computers (for example Macs with Apple chip). AstraOS itself has been tested in virtual computers so far; real PCs are the next step.
How much memory (RAM) does it need?
64 MB for the system alone. For apps we recommend 2 GB.
Can it run Windows apps?
Simple Windows programs that run in a text window start today. Programs with their own windows do not work yet. Running Windows apps directly is a goal.
Can it run Linux apps?
Simple Linux programs start, including the BusyBox toolbox with its terminal. Bigger programs do not work yet.
What about macOS apps?
That is a goal, not a feature yet.
Does AstraOS have a web browser?
Yes, a simple one. It shows normal websites. Secure websites (https) do not work yet – that comes later.
What is Astra Shield?
The protection system of AstraOS: programs stay apart, apps only get the rights they may have, a firewall, checked apps, protection against blackmail software and a virus scanner. See the security page.
Is it the most secure operating system?
That is our goal – and we want to prove it by letting everyone attack it, not just by saying it. Today it is a test version that nobody outside our team has checked yet.
How do I report a security problem?
From 10 November 2026, write to security@astraos.page.
What is a .aapp file?
An AstraOS app: the program, the rights it asks for and a digital seal. AstraOS checks the seal before installing.
Is the source code open?
No. Parts from others whose licence requires it (for example BusyBox) come with their source code.
Does this website track me?
No. The site uses no cookies and does not track you. It runs on Cloudflare, which processes requests technically like every web host.
How can I follow progress?
On the home page under versions and dates and in the roadmap. We keep both up to date.
