An operating system built from scratch
Every layer written new – and tested.
AstraOS is an operating system built from scratch: own kernel, own drivers, own desktop and network software. What exists, how it was made, what is missing.
What “from scratch” means
No Linux or Windows code is inside AstraOS. The kernel, the desktop, the network software and the apps were written new. A few small parts come from others, for example the start program Limine; we name them on the download page.
What exists
- Kernel (~816 KB) for x86-64 and ARM64
- USB, disks, files, network, sound, several processor cores
- Desktop with windows, apps and a web browser
- Loaders for simple Linux and Windows programs
- The protection system Astra Shield
How it was made
AI assistants write the code, a person decides what gets built, every step is tested in a virtual computer. Read the story, the devlog and about the AI team.
What is missing
Real-hardware testing, many drivers and a large app library. It is a pre-alpha. More on the own kernel.
AstraOS is an early pre-alpha. Alpha 0.1 comes on 10 November 2026 at 19:00 and runs in a window with AstraOS Starter for Windows. Everything below is tested in a virtual computer, not yet on real hardware.
