Windows and Linux programs on AstraOS
What already starts – and what does not.
Can AstraOS run Windows and Linux programs? Simple .exe and Linux programs start today with our own loaders. Full native support is a goal. The honest status.
What works today
- Windows programs (.exe): our own loader starts simple programs.
- Linux programs: simple programs start, including the BusyBox toolbox.
- No Linux or Windows code is inside the kernel – it only understands how such programs ask for services.
What does not work yet
Big programs with many Windows or Linux parts do not run yet. macOS programs are a goal, not a fact. Our goal for version 1.0 is that Windows, Linux and macOS programs run completely natively. Until then we only say what is tested.
Own app format
AstraOS has its own app format, .aapp. It is planned to work on x86-64 and ARM64 alike.
More: why AstraOS, comparison, try the alpha.
AstraOS is an early pre-alpha. Alpha 0.1 comes on 10 November 2026 at 19:00 and runs in a window with AstraOS Starter for Windows. Everything below is tested in a virtual computer, not yet on real hardware.
