Why AstraOS?
A Windows and Linux alternative in the making.
AstraOS is a new operating system with its own kernel, small, secure by design and built to run Windows and Linux programs. Honest facts, no hype.
The idea
Windows and Linux are mature and run almost everywhere. AstraOS does not replace them today. It asks a different question: what if an operating system were small from the start, had its own kernel, protected you by default and still ran the programs you already have?
What is true today
- Its own kernel. About 816 KB, written from scratch, with no Linux or Windows code inside. About the kernel.
- Small. The system runs in 64 MB of memory. More on 64 MB.
- Two processor types. x86-64 (most PCs) and ARM64. More on ARM64.
- Simple Windows and Linux programs start. What runs and what not.
- Protection is built in. Security.
What is a goal, not a fact
Running Windows, Linux and macOS programs completely natively is the goal for version 1.0. It is not done. Version 1.0 only comes when all goals are met; until then AstraOS is alpha or beta software.
Should you switch?
Not yet. Try the alpha in a window, follow the news and see the fair comparison.
AstraOS is an early pre-alpha. Alpha 0.1 comes on 10 November 2026 at 19:00 and runs in a window with AstraOS Starter for Windows. Everything below is tested in a virtual computer, not yet on real hardware.
